The connection between non - exponential relaxation and fragility in supercooled liquids

چکیده

Among the outstanding problems in the theory of supercooled liquids are the reasons for the rapid increase in their viscosity and relaxation times as the temperature is lowered towards the glass transition temperature T g , the non-exponential time dependence of the relaxation, and the possible connection between these two properties. The ferromagnetic Potts model on a square latice is a simple system that is found to exhibit these properties. Our calculations show that in this system the connection between them is associated with the dependence on temperature and time of the average environment of the sites. Some of the consequences of this for understanding the behavior of supercooled liquids are discussed.

Theory of structural glasses and supercooled liquids.

We review the random first-order transition theory of the glass transition, emphasizing the experimental tests of the theory. Many distinct phenomena are quantitatively predicted or explained by the theory, both above and below the glass transition temperature T(g). These include the following: the viscosity catastrophe and heat-capacity jump at T(g), and their connection; the nonexponentiality...

Dynamics in supercooled liquids and in the isotropic phase of liquid crystals: A comparison

A comparison is made of the dynamics observed over wide ranges of time and temperature between five supercooled liquids and four isotropic phase liquid crystals that have been previously studied separately. Optical-heterodyne-detected optical Kerr effect ~OHD–OKE! measurements were employed to obtain the orientational relaxation dynamics over time scales from sub-ps to tens of ns. For the super...

Relationship between fragility, diffusive directions and energy barriers in a supercooled liquid

An analysis of diffusion in a supercooled liquid based solely in the density of diffusive directions and the value of energy barriers shows how the potential energy landscape (PEL) approach is capable of explaining the a and b relaxations and the fragility of a glassy system. We find that the b relaxation is directly related to the search for diffusive directions. Our analysis shows how in stro...

Analysis of Cooperativity in Metallic Glass Forming Liquids

The relation between fragility and cooperativity of atomic motion in bulk metallic glass forming liquids is studied based on the bond strength-coordination number fluctuation model. The model describes the temperature dependence of the viscosity in terms of the mean values of the bond strength, coordination number and their fluctuations of the structural units that form the melt. According to t...
